Newsletter 10: Riots, schools and measuring happiness

12 Aug 2011 | Action for Happiness

It's been a traumatic week here in the UK, with riots showing the worst side of human nature. But it's also been inspiring to see communities uniting to clean up and find positive ways forward. Here are some observations on how the riots relate to the happiness agenda.

Action for Happiness in Schools

Our schools should be about more than just academic success. We need to help young people develop the capabilities to lead happy lives and contribute to society. In partnership with the National Children's Bureau, we plan to launch a new initiative to help schools put happiness and well-being at the heart of their activities. Please get in touch if you'd like to be involved.

Don't just measure it, take action!

In July we saw the UK government take a big step forward towards measuring the things that really matter. But doing surveys isn't enough. We're calling for urgent action to increase well-being, not just measure it.

Relating: Connect with people

Relating is this month's featured theme from our Ten Keys to Happier Living. Good relationships bring love, meaning, support and a sense of belonging. Why not try one of these actions this week, or make up your own!

What do you think?

We're very grateful to our supporters who contributed thought-provoking articles this month. What do you think about their ideas?

There's lots of lively discussion about these and many more topics on our Twitter and Facebook  pages, so do join in and let us know your views!

As always, we would love to hear from you so please get in touch: info@actionforhappiness.org

I'll leave you with these inspiring messages posted by local people after the riots in Peckham - a wonderful example of a community reacting to violence and destruction in a positive way.
